FROM BOXOFFICE.COM
Lionsgate's The Expendables 2 grossed $2.79 million on Monday to lead the daily box office for a fourth consecutive day. The ensemble action sequel fell 65 percent from Sunday's performance. That was a sharper daily decline than the 59 percent 2010's The Expendables fell when it grossed $3.94 million on its first Monday, though The Expendables 2 is also at a bit more of a disadvantage in the comparison by opening a few days later in August than The Expendables did. The Expendables 2 passed the $30 million mark yesterday and has grossed $31.38 million in four days. That is below expectations and places the film 19 percent behind the $38.77 million four-day start of The Expendables.

I'm shedding a tear for the ACTION GENRE. Not much hope left, although I have to thank Stallone for even giving it a chance to survive.

According to BO.com EX2's total budget was 140M. As of today it has only grossed ~45M WW, with this pace it might not even break even and EX3 will not happen...unless they go with a very low budget movie which makes it more difficult to get guys like Eastwood or Chan. The Action genre is dead in America!

If the $140 Million dollar figure is correct, then yes Expendables 2 will most likely NOT break even DOMESTICALLY. But if a strong overseas push comes in and EX2 can finish somewhere in the $180 Million dollar take range, that combined with Blu-Ray sales/rentals should hopefully see at least a minor profit. But regardless, a smaller budget is likely for Expendables 3.

We can only hope it does well overseas which seems to be the case from early estimates out of Russia & Italy, but did worse than the first one in the UK!! It will only open between tomorrow and next week in countries like France, Spain & Germany where Stallone, Arnold & JCVD are still huge stars. Nevertheless the action genre is dead forever in America, already according to early projections by BO.com, BTTH will only gross 32M!!!

I would welcome an EX3 with a smaller budget if it would be more like the gritty, visceral, EX1 and less like the yuk! yuk! joke fiesta that EX2 ended up being. It's still decent, but there wasn't one scene that could match the Sly and Rourke one talking about the woman on the bridge. This was more of a one liner contest with some decent action thrown in, but nothing like the tunnel scene in EX1.

I liked that wee video from IGN and I agree; Sigourney Weaver - the ONLY female needed for EX 3.

LOVED the IGN choices, although I'd rather have Jackie Chan over most of their picks any day.

I honestly don't think we have to worry about EX2 losing money. While it may not make back all it's money in it's theatrical run, most films make a bulk of their profit in the home video market.

Also, Patrick is right, this movie will clean house overseas. Van Damme, Li, Lundgren, Stallone, Schwarzenegger and even Yu are all good international draws.

I still hope a third movie will come. But I'm still shocked, that in America - the home of action movies - no one will see the movie. I hope for the asian and european market. But 140 Mio $ is to big budget, if it ist true. EX1 only made little bit more then 100 Mio. $ in USA and had 80 Mio. $. I think the money from the home market is also important. A smaller budget will be better to make more profit.

I prefer EX1 because the scene with Mickey Rourke simply great, extraordinary scene in the tunnel.
EX2 what I liked is the fight scene with Jet Li in the beginning, this scene is A W E S O M E !!!. the fight JCVD against Sly is too short, and there is no intensity in this fight.
Jean Claude Van Damme is a very good villain !

I never thought I would say this, but Ken is right on all 3 counts. Rourke and Stallone's scene was so moving it mad eth entire movie make sense. It had heart which EX2 did not.

Also, the tunnel fight was so explosive and intense, people were literally man screaming in the theater. Nothing like that in EX2.

Also, the Jet Li fight in the beginnign was the only thing that felt like EX1. It was fantastic.

I liked EX2, but I would only give it 7/10 as an action movie. EX2 director's cut gets a 9/10 from me. It had way more brutality and heart.

Budget is almost certainly not over 100M. Sly is smart enough and knows that you have to keep things lean and clean these days in the action genre and they've chosen Bulgaria because they knew they could save a ton of money by shooting the film there.

Budget wasnt $140m. not by a long shot, remember back in Jan Sly said it was around $80million, the original wasnt that much either as it was mostly independent and lionsgate bought the distribution rights.

Think of it, had say.... 'Thats my boy' opened the same day as EX2 it wouldve got at least 35-40M but remember Bourne 4 opened a week before, the competition was harder this time, like Patrick said the bourne crowd took away some of the money that EX2 wouldve had, and if it had opened a week later (this friday) it wouldve had a better opening, SLY knows that domestic will make cash but he knows worldwide will bring in at least $100m so we will get another just Sly needs a big modern name to bump up a presence, THE ROCK has to be in EX3 his name alone will get $20-30m extra

Worldwide the film will easily make over it's budget - it'll make roughly the same as EX1 did. People shouldn't worry about the "domestic" takings in America, the world goes beyond America and like has been said there are countries where the film isn't out yet. It'll do well and also on home releases.

I really hate on how movies like the raid redemption, safe, and the expendables 2, don't make as much money as movies like the avengers and the dark knight rises. I understand that those movies are more popular because they have a larger fan base, but still why not give some other types of movies a chance that don't come around often anymore?

hi, sorry about my poor english.first of all I am a fan of Stallone and action icons of 80s.I watched Ex2 and liked very much.it has the tough guys, fighting,explosions,fun..I hope I will see 2.and 3.time in theatres , and many times from blu ray.My uncles and lots my friends were all fans of arnie, sly and jcvd movies. With one of them I watched rambo 3 from VHS video when I was a child in 1990 I think, it was tremendous. About Ex 2 I have good news from Turkey boxoffice, EX 1 was watched by 54.400 moviegoers at the opening weekend,EX 2 was watched by 94.500 .So about %75 (it is impressive) more people watched the second movie.I am glad for this. Both movies are PG-15 here.Totally 2,5-3 million dollars I hope coming from Turkey. The overseas income of the movie will be big I think .And EX 3 will bring much more stars much more hype.

Lionsgate's The Expendables 2 took in $3.23 million on Tuesday to lead the daily box office for a fifth straight day. The ensemble action sequel was up a very solid 16 percent over Monday. In comparison, 2010's The Expendables fell 2 percent on its first Tuesday to gross $3.87 million. The Expendables 2 has grossed $34.61 million in five days, which is below expectations and places the film 19 percent behind the $42.63 million five-day start of The Expendables. With this weekend's new wide releases not expected to make much of an impact at the box office, The Expendables 2 is highly likely to remain in first place over the weekend.

That's good to read it's made more on Tuesday than it did on Monday. I think it'll be a slow burner this movie, nothing HUGE in the first weekend like what everyone seems to think matters but over a month or more it'll eventually make good numbers and a profit.

Let's be honest if you want all the biggest action stars of the 70's, 80's, 90's, and today in Expendables 3 you need Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Bruce Willis, Chuck Norris, Jason Statham, and Jet Li to come back (and I know Stallone will have to really talk Norris into coming back because he already said he doesn't want to). Then you gotta add Nicolas Cage, Kurt Russell, Mel Gibson, Steven Seagal, Jackie Chan, The Rock, and Vin Diesel and that is truly the A List of Hard Action stars of all time. I also think a cameo by Harrison Ford and Clint Eastwood (even though he is really a Western Star) would be cool. But let's face it if all the above were in an action movie together (ie Expendables 3) that would be EVERYONE. As for Simon West wanting Sean Connery for EX3...why? That doesn't even make sense to me at all let’s focus on the above in Expendables 3 and get every A-list action star in on it!
