Lionsgate's The Expendables 2 opened in first place this weekend with $28.59 million. Despite the comfortable first place finish (and an even bigger cast this time around), the ensemble action sequel was unable to match the $34.83 million debut of The Expendables back in August 2010. On a more positive note, after opening with $10.49 million on Friday The Expendables 2 was able to generate an opening weekend ratio of 2.72 to 1. That was a bit stronger than the opening weekend ratio of 2.61 to 1 generated by the first film. Factor in an A- CinemaScore (a notch higher than the B+ rating received by its predecessor) with a soft line-up of new releases the next three weeks and there is the potential for The Expendables 2 to hold up a bit better than The Expendables did. However, the more front-loaded nature of sequels in general will also be working against the film as well going forward. The audience breakdown for The Expendables 2 skewed towards male moviegoers (63 percent) and moviegoers 25 and older (65 percent).
