Petition for a Dredd 2 hits 100,000 signatures! + We interview the man who started the sequel campaign!
"WE DID IT! Less than a year after we began this campaign the official petition for a DREDD sequel has reached 100,000 signatures!
Thank you to everyone who has shouted about this, encouraged their friends to sign up, posted about it online, organised events, and attended conventions dressed in Judge costumes, plus all those who continue to agitate for a sequel to our favourite film!
The Facebook page has almost 82,000 'likes' but reaching 100,000 names on the petition doesn't mean we can stop - let's keep spreading the word so that those who hold the future of the franchise in their hands hear that there's a community here and we want more DREDD!"
With the petition hitting 100,000 signatures I think it's safe to say we're now one step closer to a follow up to 2012's Dredd. We recently had the pleasure of interviewing the man who started the Make A Sequel campaign on Facebook and also helped create the petition along side his co administrator Brian Ritchie and the official Dredd comic publishers, 2000 AD.
Trevor: Thanks so much for taking the time to talk with us today Frank. How goes everything?
Frank: Great. Thanks for having me.
T: The petition for the Dredd sequel recently reached a big milestone 100,000 signatures! Which is incredible when you consider the dismal box office the film received in the theaters back in 2012. It's also managed to beat mega hits Pulp Fiction, Godfather and Indiana Jones in Amazons March Madness and is now in the final round with Lord of The Rings. *Note from Trevor: Dredd has conquered the Lord of The Rings!* Dredd just seems to defy the odds, in your opinion what is it that makes the flick so special?
F: I think once people decided to finally give it a chance, they saw how good it was. At first glance, it might seem like a "generic action film" but it's much more than that. Visually, it looks great and there's just something about it that makes it great. I think the fact that it beat all of those films to win the Amazon Movie bracket is a true testament to how many fans the film has now and how many people want a sequel.
T: Your Facebook page also has over 80,000 likes. It's caught the attention of Karl Urban, Alex Garland, 2000 AD and the studios.
Did you ever imagine you would get this kind of response when you first started it?
F: Honestly, that's what I wanted to happen but wasn't sure if it would or not. But once people started seeing the film, it was only a matter of time. I think that the funny original content and 2000 AD artwork has helped bring attention to the site as well. I met Brian Ritchie (co-admin) because he messaged the page and started helping me with different ideas, logos, etc. He also recently helped get together a screening of Dredd in his hometown and is a huge Dredd fan. 2000 AD has also played huge part in the campaign.
T: Ideally, if your campaign does prove successful. How much more Dredd would you like to see? Personally, we would be happy with a trilogy. Beyond that you risk going into Star Wars territory where more isn't necessarily a good thing...
F: Alex Garland has said that he planned it as a three part trilogy with the third film bringing in Judge Death. I think that Judge Death is something that all the Dredd fans want to see. I also remember hearing that Garland said that he thought television would be the best avenue for Dredd to go down, which I don't think would be a bad idea either. There are plenty of big networks like HBO and AMC that are devoted to making good quality shows.
T: Before going into the film, my staff and I were already huge fans of the source material. Did you also have a familiarity with the comics and if so,
how faithful do you think Dredd was as an adaptation to them?
F: Before the film, I was really only familiar with the '95 Judge Dredd film starring Stallone (which made me a little skeptical about watching the new one) so I had low expectations when I went to the theater to see DREDD. I knew that Judge Dredd always kept his helmet on and that the Stallone film didn't really stay true to the comics. After seeing DREDD, I educated myself on the character and I also had my co-admin, Brian Ritchie, to bring me up to speed on everything. I think that the Karl Urban film stayed faithful to the comics for the most part while putting a modern spin on it as well.
T: Our final question. Should a sequel come to pass, what characters from the Dredd universe would you like to see appear? And please don't say Walter the Wobot!
F: I think that Rob Schneider should come back for the sequel... Just kidding. I think I and everyone else would like to see Judge Death at some point but there are a lot of different things that they could do. I think for the second film, they had planned to go into the "Cursed Earth" storyline.
T: Thank you so much for everything you and your team have done for this film. Even if a Dredd 2 doesn't become a reality, you guys sure gave it one hell of a shot!
F: Thanks, we hope it happens!
Big thanks to Frank for allowing us to interview him. You can check out his Make a Sequel Facebook page by clicking here, and add your voice to the petition here!
Breaking News: Arnold Schwarzenegger will film the new Terminator trilogy back to back over 9 months! + Our favorite Brosnan film on Action Highlights
We have some huge news to share with you all today. It looks like starting in May Arnold Schwarzenegger will be a very busy man over a nine month period where he will film the new Terminator trilogy back to back!
"The Terminator reboot’s trilogy of films will be shot back to back, according to Deadline.
Terminator: Genesis, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, is set to be the first of three films which will film across nine months.
Deadline reports: ‘Here is some more good news for fans: they have made first plans to shoot three installments to put this saga to rest.
‘The second and third films will be done back to back over nine months.’
Production on Genesis kicks off in Louisiana soon."
Arnie is not getting any younger so we think this is a great idea. Hopefully these new Terminator films can recapture the magic of the first two and avoid the pitfalls of what came after...
Stay tuned for more on Terminator:Genesis in the coming months!
In other news, it seems Sabotage completely bombed at the box office this weekend. According to Box Office Mojo it managed to pull in a very disappointing $5,330,000. A figure even lower than the Last Stand.
Comingsoon has some interesting news on Mel Gibson;
"Mel Gibson is eyeing the headlining role in Blood Father, an upcoming action thriller from Mesrine director Jean-Francois Richet. Deadline has the news, likening the overall tone of the project to Taken.
Peter Craig (The Town) provides provides the screenplay for Blood Father, which would feature Gibson as an ex-convict who must protect his estranged daughter from violent drug dealers.
Gibson recently played the villain in Robert Rodriguez's Machete Kills and will soon be back on the big screen in Patrick Hughes' The Expendables 3.
Why Not Productions and producer Chris Briggs are handling the production, which is targeting a May shoot in New Mexico."
With the awesome news that Pierce Brosnan will likely be one of the stars of Expendables 4, this week we spotlight our favorite action movie of his! Check out our page by clicking here
