1997's 'Face/Off' was originally written with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone in the starring roles... with John Woo as the director it would have probably been the greatest movie of all time. Unfortunately, it didn't quite work out that way and we would have to wait many years later to see the two star alongside each other in a film, in the dismal 'Escape Plan' no less. Instead, we had John Travolta and Nicolas Cage in the roles and the film turned out amazing regardless. The acting is over the top, the premise is absurd and incredibly unrealistic but everything is taken very seriously and played straight by the actors. This in turn allows the audience to take whats happening seriously and we feel the weight of the emotion and tension throughout. Never before has a film combined emotion with over the top action scenes so perfectly, John Woo does an excellent job here and Face/Off goes down as yet another one of the director's masterpieces. This flick gets Expendables Premiere's highest recommendation, go check it out!
"To foil an extortion plot, an FBI agent undergoes a face-transplant surgery and assumes the identity and physical appearance of a ruthless terrorist, but the plan backfires when the same criminal impersonates the cop with the same method."
