One thing we do know is that Stallone has decided on a director, and posted a few thoughts on his decision:
"Found an EXCITING director... Things sometimes happen for a Reason....Okay? It will be An Unknown to most of you... Like I was centuries ago , or so it seems, But still The Battle! ... Just In the Blood...."
Brian Lynch isn't actually mentioned by name but he tweeted the following,
"I can't say if the rumors of me directing THE EXPENDABLES 3 are true, sorry. My director contract says I have to keep it secret."
He may not be Mel Gibson but if it is Lynch, Stallone sounds enthusiastic and must have a good reason for choosing this guy. He also added that "I would Direct it myself , but I want my HANDS free to fight!!!" Personally I think he handled both very well in the first Expendables movie but it must have been challenging to do both at once.
Stallone has also been re-emphasising his priority for adding new blood to Expendables 3 lately:
"My best PURE ACTION FILM-The last RAMBO- I want this one too top it and I believe it will with NEW BLOOD...Searching for a young lion to tear the screen apart with fresh vision!!... I think I know who is hungry and talented.... Fate at the Gate."
Speaking of blood, I wonder if EX 3 will rely on CG blood or practical effects. Squibs have become somewhat rare in modern action movies but were noticeably used in Bullet To The Head and I thought they looked great.
A trailer for The Escape Plan was revealed at Cinemacon
"The Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger starrer Escape Plan showed off its first trailer, largely focusing on the storyline that has Stallone's Ray Breslin, an expert at breaking out prisons, being kidnapped and sent to a new, experimental jail. The prison itself has all the cells as as The Silence of the Lambs-style glass cubes, all set up on different levels of metal scaffolding with guards wearing creepy all-black masks.
Schwarzenegger plays Emil Rottmayer, an inmate already in the prison who reluctantly teams with Breslin to win their freedom. They've definitely worked in a few one-liners, too. At one point, Stallone punches Schwarzenegger and he shoots back, "You hit like a vegetarian!"
Masked guards, glass cubes and scaffolding? Those sound like great ingredients for a cool action movie. Some of the people lucky enough to see the trailer also had positive things to say:
from @Slashfilm: Cnemacon: "Escape Plan looks like a fun 90’ action flick, @TheSlyStallone & @Schwarzenegger breaking out of a super duper max security prison"
@EriReynolds: O_O RT @firstshowing: "First footage from Escape Plan with Sly & Arnold looks 10x better than both of The Expendables movies. Badass."
A stuntman working on the movie had these comments:
- "it was fantastic. Tom (Hardy) didn’t like to rehearse the shorter sequences much and it proved to be a Godsend. It meant he was actually playing catch-up in the fights, as would really happen. It gave me what I always wanted for the fight scenes in this film, which was to have the choreography hidden inside what looked like a real fight and not let you see the beats....It's the biggest action film shot in the world at one time. All the stunts are real and CGI was only used to remove the safety cables!"
