"Jean-Claude Van Damme is returning to Kickboxer, one of the movies that launched his career. The actor is now in final negotiations to join the cast of the new remake, which also includes Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Alain Moussi (X-Men: Days of Future Past). THR reports that instead of playing the student, Van Damme will assume the role of master. He's replacing Thai action star Tony Jaa, who dropped out due to scheduling conflicts.
Kickboxer follows Kurt Sloan (Moussi), a talented martial artist who must learn the ancient kickboxing art of Muay Thai to avenge his brother's death at the hands of Tong Po (Bautista). Here, Van Damme is Master Chow, who trains Sloan in the ways of the kickboxing. (Dennis Chan played Chow in the '89 original.)
"We are so excited to have Kickboxer roll into production and to have JCVD in the role of Master Chow, passing the torch to Alain, to have him lead the franchise to a new generation," said producer Ted Field of Radar Films.
John Stockwell (Blue Crush) is directing the film, which begins shooting in New Orleans this week. The production will also shoot in Thailand."
Our anticipation for this flick has just skyrocketed, lets hope that it's at least half as good as the original.
